Understanding, Empowering, Advancing Together

"While every refugee's story is different and their anguish personal, they all share a common thread of uncommon courage – the courage not only to survive, but to persevere and rebuild their shattered lives." - Antonio Guterres, U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees

Whether fleeing their homes and the hardships of refugee camps or uprooting their old lives for a chance for a better future, Houston's refugees and immigrants continue to face difficulties in their new lives, from learning English to securing jobs. CHAT's mission is to foster the health and healthcare access of Houston's immigrants and refugees through education and advocacy in their local communities. However, to continue empowering our clients, we need your support.

Palosha, one of our clients, came to Houston from Afghanistan in June 2016 when she was four months pregnant. One day, she needed to visit the doctor. Unable to understand English, she couldn't ask for help or directions to the nearest clinic, and she ended up walking with her husband and two young children for several hours in the heat.

Hamzah, a 17 year old Syrian refugee, arrived to Houston six months ago and was immediately enrolled in 11th grade. Having lived in a refugee camp for years, Hamzah had been out of school for years and never had the opportunity to learn English. He struggles in school, particularly in reading. After school, he diligently works to support his family, leaving little time to work on his studies. Recently, he was stopped by a police officer for running a red light at 2 AM. Unable to understand the officer's instructions, Hamzah was held at the police department's office for several hours before being released.

Palosha and Hamzah are just two of our clients who are working hard at learning English and learning skills for better economic opportunities.

CHAT provides tutoring and various programs, ranging from English classes to photography lessons to mental health workshops, all geared towards improving the environment of Houston's refugee and immigrant communities. Through this approach, we aim to foster a culture of health. After we fully engage our newest neighbors, only then will we advance together.
